안녕하세요. 이화여자대학교 영상예술 주임교수를 맡고 있는 이찬웅입니다.

    

오늘날 이미지의 중요성은 더 강조할 필요 없이 누구나 이해하고 있으며, 그 영향력은 역사적으로도 전례가 없는 것입니다. 특히 영화와 비디오, 그리고 컴퓨터의 등장 이후로 영상은 운동과 시간을 직접 담을 수 있게 되었습니다. 세계적인 비엔날레와 미술관에서도 영상예술이 이미 수십년 전부터 중심 장르가 되었습니다. 

우리 영상예술전공은 독창적인 영상의 창작, 새로운 기술에 대한 탐구, 미디어에 대한 비판적 사유를 통해 영상의 시대에 창조적으로 개입하고자 합니다. 우리 전공의 재학생들은 미디어아트와 아트&테크놀로지를 두 날개 삼아 야심찬 비행을 하고자 합니다. 

이화여대는 미디어아트와 길고도 뜻깊은 관계를 맺고 있습니다. 2001년에 비디오아트의 창시자인 백남준 선생님을 석좌교수로 초빙하였고, 학생들이 뉴욕에 있는 작가의 작업실을 방문하여 현대예술에 관해 영감 가득한 얘기를 나누기도 했습니다. 

그리고 석좌교수 초빙을 계기로 EMAP(Ewha Media Art Presentation)을 출범시켜 지금까지 이어오고 있습니다. 이는 국내에서 유일하게 대학이 주최하는 국제 미디어아트 페스티벌로서, 예술적으로나 사회적으로 시의적인 주제를 조명해 이를 미디어아트를 통해 대중적으로 전달해왔습니다. 관람객들은 이 특별한 행사를 통해 해가 진 후 미디어아트를 통해 아름답게 변모한 본교의 캠퍼스를 감상할 수 있고, 예술과 풍경이 합치하는 예외적인 경험을 할 수 있었습니다. 

이화여대 캠퍼스에는 스크린의 영상이 특별한 밤을 만들어왔습니다. 우리 영상예술전공은 미디어와 첨단기술을 통해  창작하고 사유하고자 하는 모든 꿈을 환영합니다. 당신과 학생으로서, 또는 협업의 파트너로서 만나길 기원합니다.

Hello.

I am Chan-Woong Lee, serving as the Chair of the “Media Arts and Technology“ Program at Ewha Womans University.

Today, the importance of images requires no emphasis—everyone understands it, and their influence is historically unprecedented. Particularly since the advent of film, video, and computers, moving images have become capable of directly capturing movement and time. Video art has already been a central genre in major international biennales and museums for decades.

Our “Media Arts and Technology” Program seeks to creatively engage with the age of moving images through original video creation, exploration of new technologies, and critical thinking about media. Our students aspire to take ambitious flight on the twin wings of ‘media art’ and ‘art & technology’.

Ewha Womans University has a long and meaningful relationship with media art. In 2001, we invited Nam June Paik, the founder of video art, as our chair professor, and students had the opportunity to visit the artist's studio in New York for inspiring conversations about contemporary art.

Following the appointment of our chair professor, we launched EMAP (Ewha Media Art Presentation), which continues to this day. This is the only international media art festival hosted by a university in Korea, illuminating timely artistic and social themes and communicating them to the public through media art. Through this special event, visitors have been able to appreciate our campus beautifully transformed by media art after sunset and experience the exceptional convergence of art and landscape.

On Ewha's campus, screen-based images have created special nights. Our Video Art Program welcomes all dreams of creating and thinking through media and cutting-edge technology. I hope to meet you as a student or as a collaborative partner.
