Two Projects Selected for 2025 Humanities and Social Sciences Research Support Program
Two Ewha researchers won major grants for the “2025 Humanities and Social Sciences Research Support Program,” reaffirming the university’s status as a leading research hub for the humanities and social sciences in the country. Launched in 1963 and led by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea,, the program is a flagship national R&D initiative that aims to strengthen the capabilities of researchers, foster the next generation of scholars, and to build a foundation for collaborative research at university-affiliated institutes. Prof. Soyeon Kim The first grant was awarded to tThe Korean Culture Research Institute. Funded by the “Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project,” the Institute will receive a total of KRW 1.98 billion over the next six years to develop a database for the “Encyclopedia of Modern Korean Kitchen Material Culture.” The principal investigator, Professor Soyeon Kim at the Department of Art History, stated, “The kitchen space constitutes a remarkable research subject where diverse elements converge, including food culture, industrial technology, design, and gender.” She emphasized the project’s mission to document and preserve modern and contemporary kitchen culture as preliminary cultural heritage. This project carries particular significance as it ensures the continuity of material culture studies covering the Joseon Dynasty to the modern era, following the Institute’s 2019 database project on Joseon-era craft. Prof. Min Hee Go Another grant was awarded to tthe research team led by Professor Min Hee Go of the Department of Political Science & International Relations. Funded by the “Social Sciences Korea (SSK) Global Agenda Research Program,” the project, titled “Unpacking the Algorithmic Diffusion of Animosities: Data-Driven Approaches to Social Frictions in Korea,” consists of an interdisciplinary team of experts in political science, data science, and economics and aims to refine the theoretical concept of animosities and empirically examine the causes and consequences of animosities in politics. To this end, they propose to analyze AI- and algorithm-driven diffusion and reproduction patterns and compare them with conventional public opinion. Professor Go noted, “Korean society has entered an era where antipathy is being expressed in multi-faceted ways.,” She further added that “We hope our study can contribute to promoting social cohesion and coexistence in the polarized society.”
Ewha’s Spirit of Sharing Realized by 2025 Ewha Summer Volunteers
The Volunteer Services Team of the Office of Student Affairs announced the successful completion of educational volunteer activities conducted at home and abroad by the 2025 Ewha Summer Volunteers over summer vacation. Launched in 2000 as a representative volunteer program rooted in the Christian sense of neighborly love, the Ewha Volunteers once again embodied Ewha’s spirit of sharing and service through their summer activities. The Domestic Education Volunteer Team, consisting of 108 members, was dispatched to 18 institutions nationwide on two occasions, from July 28 to August 1 and from August 4 to 8, respectively. The team offered creative educational programs, subject-specific instruction, artistic and athletic activities, and mentoring for children and adolescents at local children’s centers and elementary schools. Meanwhile, overseas volunteer activities were conducted in the U.S. and Cambodia. The 12 members of the U.S. Education Volunteer Team visited Camp Choson in Minnesota from June 27 to July 8. They provided Korean adoptee children and their families with Korean language education, traditional cultural experiences, and mentoring, helping instill a positive image toward their identity and roots. During the same period, the 12 members of the Cambodia Education Volunteer Team conducted health, environment, and science education programs linked to their academic majors at Ewha Srang School. They also improved the library environment, utilizing English books donated by Ewha faculty members, staff, and students. Despite disruptions caused by a flight cancellation and international circumstances, the volunteers remarked, “The time we spent with the children was a meaningful opportunity for our growth.” The Volunteer Services Team held the disbanding ceremony for the 2025 Ewha Summer Volunteers and the Pear Blossom Sharing Corps at the ECC Lee Sam-bong Hall on August 21, where participants shared the outcomes of their activities. Dean of Student Affairs Jeong Ah Choi commended the students for their dedication in her congratulatory remarks, while the conferment of awards for outstanding volunteers and reports on the activity outcomes reaffirmed the spirit of community in promoting a more inclusive society. The Ewha Volunteers and the Pear Blossom Sharing Corps embody Ewha’s commitment to fulfilling its social responsibilities as an educational institution beyond simple volunteer activities. Since its founding as the starting point of women’s higher education and as a modern educational institution, Ewha has upheld its founding spirit of sharing and service, striving to build a community of coexistence in solidarity with the disadvantaged and marginalized while advancing its public mission.
Ewha Womans University Announces Major Donation of Works by Late Contemporary Artist Prof. Suki Seokyeong Kang
Ewha Womans University Announces Major Donation of Works by Late Contemporary Artist Prof. Suki Seokyeong Kang A Singular Legacy of Korean Contemporary Art Endowed to Promote Education and the Arts Ewha Womans University (President: Hyang-Sook Lee) has received an extraordinary donation of around 400 works by the late contemporary artist and Ewha professor Suki Seokyeong Kang (1977–2025) from her bereaved family. The collection includes all works consigned to galleries, as well as pieces previously donated by the artist herself to the Ewha Womans University Museum. In accordance with the wishes of both the artist and her family, this extensive body of work will be preserved and utilized as a vital foundation for artistic education and research at Ewha. Such a large-scale donation of an artist’s oeuvre to a university or public institution is exceptionally rare, underscoring the special significance of this bequest. The late Professor Suki Seokyeong Kang graduated from the Department of Korean Painting at Ewha and earned an M.A. in Painting from the Royal College of Art in London, later returning to Ewha as a professor of Korean painting. Throughout her artistic career, she established a distinctive presence in Korea’s contemporary art scene through her experimental and synesthetic practice. Her representative work Grandmother Tower—a delicate structure in which each element supports the rest while maintaining minimal points of contact through the friction of thread alone without any adhesive—earned her the prestigious Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel, the leading international art fair, in 2018. The following year, she was invited to participate in the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale, solidifying her status as an internationally recognized artist. Working across diverse media, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance, Kang developed an artistic language that bridged tradition and contemporaneity. Notable among her works are the Jeong (井) series, inspired by Jeongganbo, a system of music notation developed during the Joseon Dynasty; the Mat series, derived from woven rush mats used on the stage for the royal court dance Chunaengmu; and the Mora series, which reimagined the linguistic unit as a fundamental unit of her painting. These works reflect her subtle contemplation on the spaces taken up by individuals within society. Even while battling cancer, Kang continued to expand her artistic vision. Her solo exhibitions, Willow Drum Oriole at Leeum Museum of Art in 2023 and MARCH at Kukje Gallery in 2024, explored relationships among coexisting beings and shared landscapes, leaving a profound impression on audiences. Her final international exhibition during her lifetime, Mountain–Hour–Face, was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver in the U.S. from March to May 2025. This exhibition explored themes of mountains, nature, and landscape, as well as the ways in which humans relate to one another, offering audiences a uniquely immersive experience. Following Professor Kang’s passing in April at the age of 48, her family formally conveyed her wish to donate her works posthumously to Ewha Womans University, her alma mater and the institution to which she dedicated her academic career. The donation includes full ownership of all works currently consigned to galleries. Kang’s family expressed their hope that the donated works “will serve as a valuable resource for advancing the scholarship and education in the arts at Ewha.” In June, Ewha Womans University held a formal signing and handover ceremony for the donation, attended by the late professor’s father, Kang Tak-Lim, Professor Emeritus at Daejeon University; her mother, Choi Jeong-Sook; her elder brother, Kang Yohahn, MD; her husband, Judge Gong Do-Il; and her daughter, Gong Hyun; as well as university officials. Ewha Womans University will establish a dedicated committee to thoroughly deliberate the preservation and scholarly utilization of the donated works. The university also plans to organize future exhibitions and symposia to highlight the social significance and artistic contributions of Professor Kang’s oeuvre. “The late Professor Suki Seokyeong Kang bridged the gap between tradition and the present through her art, leaving behind a profound resonance that invites us to reflect on our times,” said President Hyang-Sook Lee. “Her body of work will remain a treasured asset, inspiring both education and artistic imagination at Ewha.”
