Ewha Pioneers Education in AI Era with Selection for Phase 4 of K-MOOC
Ewha Pioneers Education in AI Era with Selection for Phase 4 of K-MOOC Ewha Womans University has been selected by the Ministry of Education as a “leading university” for Phase 4 of the K-MOOC (Korea Massive Open Online Course) initiative, reaffirming its pioneering role in online open education. This is Ewha’s fourth consecutive time to be selected following its participation in Phases 1, 2, and 3 since the initiative’s launch in 2015. As part of the Ministry’s effort to expand lifelong learning opportunities in the AI and digital fields, ten universities were selected nationwide for the program. Under the Phase 4 initiative, Ewha plans to develop interdisciplinary courses that explore history, the arts, and global citizenship education in the AI era through the lens of the humanities and social sciences and to offer foundational courses on generative AI and large language models (LLMs). Ewha will develop 12 new courses over the next three years, launching courses such as “A World History of Underdogs,” “Large Language Models for Everyone,” and “The Aesthetics of Technology and Art” in 2026 and rolling out interdisciplinary courses on topics including modern physics and AI, global citizenship education, and the Korean Wave and global culture in the years ahead. Through these efforts, Ewha aims to build an inclusive model of AI literacy that moves beyond a technology-centered approach and integrates the humanities, arts, and social sciences while also expanding credit exchanges among Korean universities and strengthening international educational cooperation. To date, Ewha has developed 47 K-MOOC courses and offered them 448 times, with many of its courses being recognized through selection as Outstanding Courses and Blue-Ribbon Courses. Those courses have also been utilized on overseas MOOC platforms, at other universities, and in faculty training programs, winning acclaim for the quality and competitiveness of Ewha’s educational offerings.

Planetary Health Forum 2026 Presents “UniverCity” Vision for Sustainable Future
Planetary Health Forum 2026 Presents “UniverCity” Vision for Sustainable Future The Ewha Global Institute for Sustainable Partnership and Empowerment (EGISE) hosted the Planetary Health Forum 2026 on May 15 at the LG Convention Hall in the International Education Building to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Ewha Womans University’s founding and the first anniversary of the institute’s establishment. The forum was organized to examine the impacts of climate change and the energy transition on human health and society while exploring collaborative pathways for a sustainable future. Under the theme of “Transforming Climate Futures and Empowering Citizens: A UniverCity Initiative for Planetary Health,” the forum brought together representatives from leading domestic and international organizations including the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment; the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency; the World Bank Group Korea Office; the Global Green Growth Institute; the WHO Asia-Pacific Centre for Environment and Health; NAVER; LG Chem; and Samsung E&A. The forum discussed solutions to the climate crisis and related health challenges through the “UniverCity” model in which universities and cities collaborate on research, education, policy, and public participation. Its first session included keynote addresses and a panel discussion on the impact of climate change and environmental pollution on human health and social equity and concluded with a declaration and pledge in which all participants reaffirmed their shared commitment to planetary health. Eun-Hee Ha, Director of EGISE, presented “UniverCity Vision” in the second session, and experts from academia, industry, and civil society discussed university and city strategies to achieve planetary health. That session also included the 2026 Ewha ESG Idea Competition Awards Ceremony, which recognized 26 outstanding ideas.
EMAP 2026 Held in Celebration of Ewha’s 140th Anniversary
EMAP 2026 Held in Celebration of Ewha’s 140th Anniversary International media art festival EMAP (Ewha Media Art Presentation) 2026, hosted by Ewha Womans University and organized by the College of Art & Design, successfully concluded its run from May 11 to 17, drawing around 10,000 visitors. Due to the overwhelming response, the exhibition was extended by one day from its original schedule. Initiated in 2001 following the university’s appointment of world-renowned video artist Nam June Paik as a distinguished professor, this year’s edition of EMAP marked the 140th anniversary of the university’s founding and the 20th anniversary of Paik’s passing, taking the climate crisis and the sensory experience of water as its central themes. EMAP 2026 featured a special exhibition titled A Million Silver Bamboo: The Rain We Share, with Frances Morris, former director of Tate Modern, serving as advisor and John Kenneth Paranada, Sungah Serena Choo, and Sooyoung Lim serving as co-curators. Through the lens of the water cycle, the exhibition explored the impacts of climate change on humanity and the environment, on urban infrastructure and the human body, and on the ocean and the atmosphere. “A million silver bamboo” (Cheonmaneunjuk in Korean) is a traditional expression that compares a torrential downpour to countless stalks of silver bamboo, evoking an era in which climate disasters have become part of everyday life. The exhibition featured works by 40 domestic and international artists, including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Marcel Broodthaers, Nicolás García Uriburu, Minha Park, Bokyung Jun, and Nam June Paik. Alongside the main exhibition, the Nam June Paik Art Center’s special exhibition Nam June Paik, Ecologist of the Videosphere shed new light on Paik’s media-ecological perspective through major works from the collection, including TV Crown, Moon Is the Oldest TV, and Elephant Cart. The opening ceremony, held at ECC Valley, featured performances including the College of Music’s Ballet & 12 Cellos, contemporary dance, traditional Korean dance, and a laser performance by artist Jeho Yun, creating a festive atmosphere. EMAP 2026 also featured the screening program Heavy Rain, curator talks, a special lecture by Nam June Paik Art Center director Namhee Park, an exhibition of works by undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Art & Design, and the student art awards ceremony (EMAPrize).
Ewha Holds Special “MEMORY AND FUTURE” Exhibition to Mark 140th Anniversary
Ewha Holds Special “MEMORY AND FUTURE” Exhibition to Mark 140th Anniversary The Ewha Womans University Museum and the Ewha Archives are presenting the special exhibition “MEMORY AND FUTURE: Celebrating 140 Years of Truth, Goodness, Beauty at Ewha” at the Special Exhibition Hall on the museum’s second floor through December 31 for the university’s 140th anniversary. The exhibition reflects on Ewha’s educational ideals of truth, goodness, and beauty and its proud history of advancing women’s education and culture while sharing its vision for the future. Approximately 280 artifacts, including state-recognized Treasures and National Treasures, are on display. The exhibition is organized into two sections: “Ewha” and “Truth, Goodness, Beauty.” The Ewha section takes a multifaceted look at the university’s 140-year history, which began with Ewha Haktang, and the contributions of Ewha graduates to society through a wide range of historical materials and records. On display are school artifacts and photographs, including the desk used by Alice Appenzeller, the sixth principal of Ewha Haktang; a class bell from the Ewha Haktang era; diplomas; school and athletic uniforms; and a May Queen crown. The exhibition also includes an interactive space featuring historical figures and voices restored using AI technology and a video titled “140 Years of Ewha: From Memory to the Future,” providing a deeper understanding of Ewha’s 140-year history. There is also an AI-powered activity that lets visitors create and keep images of themselves wearing historical school uniforms, a hanbok commemorating the university’s 70th anniversary, a May Queen crown, or the university’s newly redesigned academic regalia. The “Truth, Goodness, Beauty” section highlights the spirit of Ewha through some of the university’s finest cultural heritages and donated artifacts. The “Truth” space features major documentary heritages, while the “Goodness” space presents donated artifacts that embody the values of sharing and dedication. The “Beauty” space showcases Ewha’s cultural achievements through exhibits on women archaeologists’ participation in early excavation projects, as well as the museum’s own research, excavations, and exhibitions. Exhibition highlights include White Porcelain Jar with Grape Design in Underglaze Iron (a National Treasure), as well as Sangho Dogam Uigwe Vol. II (a royal protocol on the conferment of honorific titles), Inscription on the Wall of Pyeongyang Fortress, Gisa-gyecheop (Album of Paintings of the Gatherings of Elders), and Jar with Plum, Bamboo, and Bird Design in Underglaze Blue (all Treasures). A variety of other artifacts are also on display, including Goryeo-period ornaments and a handwritten letter by Empress Myeongseong. The special exhibition is free of charge and open to visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. On the last Wednesday of each month, designated as Culture Day, the exhibition remains open until 7:00 p.m.
