IIAS

The Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS) serves as an umbrella coordinating organization for our research and training centers, including the Cambodia Development Institute, Public Diplomacy Center, Global Leadership Center, Center for Global Social Responsibility, and EU Center. The IIAS provides innovative learning and leading-edge research opportunities for members of the Ewha Community and bridges the gap between academics and practitioners. It brings together researchers and student research assistants for major research initiatives and projects such as the Global Top 5 Project on “Social Capital, Democratic Governance, and Corporate Social Responsibility.” We partner with other institutes and universities in Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America, and Africa, as well as with government and non-government organizations to provide opportunities for scholars, students, and the general public. We work closely with the Scholars Group for Public Diplomacy of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA), the Korean International Studies Association (KISA), and Palgrave Macmillan Publishers to arrange workshops, conferences, and publication opportunities. The IIAS reaches out to the wider academic community through its journal, the Asian International Studies Review (AISR). Ranked in the top bracket of journals by the National Research Foundation, AISR is the official journal of both APISA and KISA and also supports student publication initiatives. In addition, the Center for Korean Language Education and Culture (CKLEAC) is housed under the IIAS. It focuses mainly on research into the acquisition, pedagogy assessment, use, and analysis of Korean as a second or foreign language in Korea and abroad.

The affiliated centers of IIAS are as follows:

  • Cambodia Development Institute
  • Center for Conflict Management
  • Center for Global Social Responsibility
  • Center for Korean Language Education and Culture
  • EU Center
  • FTA Center
  • Public Diplomacy Center

The Asian International Studies Review (AISR) is a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal published biannually (June and December) under the supervision of Ewha Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and Institute for International and Area Studies (IIAS). It is a registered journal at the National Research Foundation of Korea, the official journal of the Korea International Studies Association (KISA), and one of five journals endorsed by the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA). It has been listed with the Korea Citation Index (KCI) since 2010 and with Scopus since 2018.

Since the first publication in December 1997, the AISR has actively advanced research on contemporary international challenges. It supports networking and the exchange of ideas between academics and practitioners across disciplines, countries, and regions in order to give a greater voice to scholars focused on the international interactions of Asia and to Asian-based scholars of international affairs. Past issues have included papers from a broad spectrum of fields related to international studies, including international economics, international politics, international law, international business, development cooperation, and cultural studies.
