위험, 미디어, 디지털 자본주의를 탐구하는 연구실

위험과 디지털 사회 연구실 (Risk & Digital Society Lab, RDS Lab)은 현대 사회에서 확산되는 다양한 위험 문제를 커뮤니케이션 관점에서 분석하고, 디지털 미디어 환경과 접점 속에서 그 해결 가능성을 모색하는 연구를 수행한다. 연구실의 기본적인 문제의식은 위험사회에서 발생하는 다양한 문제들이 단순히 기술적이거나 개별적인 차원의 문제가 아니라, 커뮤니케이션 과정과 사회 구조의 상호작용 속에서 형성되고 증폭된다는 점에 있다. 

이에 본 연구실은 커뮤니케이션 행위자와 미디어를 중심으로 한 사회 구조의 중층적인 상호작용을 분석하고, 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 커뮤니케이션을 통한 문제 해결 능력의 향상과 디지털 사회 공론장의 확장을 지향한다. 특히 본 연구실은 세 가지 핵심 연구 축을 중심으로 연구를 수행한다.

첫째, 위험 자체에 대한 연구로서 과학, 보건, 환경, 재난 등 다양한 영역에서 발생하는 위험과 이에 대한 위기 커뮤니케이션 및 위기관리, 갈등해소 과정을 분석한다.

둘째, 디지털 미디어 관련 위험에 대한 연구로서 플랫폼, 알고리즘, 디지털 프로모션, 저널리즘 구조 등 디지털 미디어 사회의 작동 원리와 권력 구조를 비판적으로 탐구한다.

셋째, 위험과 디지털 미디어의 접점에 대한 연구로서, 현대 사회에서 위험이 디지털 미디어 환경 속에서 어떻게 구성되고 확산되며, 어떠한 방식으로 의미를 획득하고 관리되는지를 분석한다. 

본 연구실은 위험 문제가 더 이상 독립적인 영역에 머무는 것이 아니라 디지털 미디어 구조 속에서 구현된다는 점에 주목하며, 문제 해결 역시 개인적 대응과 구조적 변화가 결합되어야 한다는 입장을 취한다. 이러한 연구를 위해 본 연구실은 질적 연구와 양적 연구를 결합한 통합적 방법론을 지향한다. 

담론 분석, 인터뷰, 사례 연구와 같은 질적 접근과 함께, 빅데이터 분석, 실험, 설문 분석 등 양적 방법을 병행함으로써 복합적인 사회 현상을 다층적으로 설명하고자 한다.

궁극적으로 위험과 디지털 사회 연구실은 커뮤니케이션을 통해 위험 문제를 이해하고 해결하는 이론적이고 실천적 기반을 구축하며, 디지털 미디어 시대에 적합한 새로운 공론장의 가능성을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

Exploring Risk, Media, and Digital Capitalism

Risk & Digital Society Lab (RDS Lab) examines the diverse risks that characterize contemporary society from a communication perspective and explores their potential solutions at the intersection with digital media environments. The lab is grounded in the premise that the problems emerging in risk society are not merely technical or individual in nature, but are shaped and amplified through the interaction between communication processes and social structures. 

Accordingly, the lab focuses on the multilayered dynamics among communication actors, media systems, and broader social structures. Through this approach, it aims to enhance problem-solving capacities through communication and to expand the public sphere in the digital age. The lab’s research is organized around three core areas.

First, it investigates risk itself, examining risks in domains such as science, health, environment, and disasters, along with processes of crisis communication, crisis management, and conflict resolution.

Second, it examines risks related to digital media, critically analyzing the operational logics and power structures of digital media society, including platforms, algorithms, digital promotion, and journalism.

Third, it explores the intersection of risk and digital media, analyzing how risks are constructed, circulated, and acquire meaning within digital media environments, and how they are managed in these contexts. 

The lab emphasizes that contemporary risks are not confined to isolated domains but are embedded within digital media structures. Accordingly, it argues that effective solutions require both individual efforts and structural transformation. To address these complex issues, the lab adopts an integrated methodological approach 

that combines qualitative and quantitative research. It employs qualitative methods such as discourse analysis, interviews, and case studies, alongside quantitative approaches including big data analysis, experiments, and survey research, in order to provide a multilayered understanding of social phenomena. 

Ultimately, the Risk & Digital Society Lab seeks to build both theoretical and practical foundations for understanding and addressing risk through communication, while contributing to the development of a new public sphere suited to the digital media era.
