Special Lecture by Professor Russell J. Funk Ewha School of Business is pleased to host a special lecture featuring Professor Russell J. Funk (University of Minnesota) Topic: The Shape of What's New: Geometric Approaches to Measuring Scientific and Technological Progress Novelty is central to understanding scientific and technological progress, yet existing approaches reduce it to a single number—how far a contribution sits from what came before. But the knowledge landscape from which contributions emerge is not merely a stock of prior work to be near or far from—it has directionality, an accumulated trajectory shaped by what came before. Relative to that trajectory, a contribution can be novel by pushing further along the path prior work was already pursuing—surprising in degree—or by departing into territory the accumulated landscape does not point toward—surprising in kind. I present a framework that makes this distinction precise by reconstructing each contribution from the prior knowledge available at the time of its creation. What the reconstruction cannot parsimoniously explain is the novelty signal, and that signal has direction relative to the trajectory of accumulated knowledge. Applied to 5.6 million U.S. patents, the two components of novelty predict disruption in opposite directions—frontier-extending novelty is consolidating, frontier-opening novelty is disruptive, with nearly symmetric effect sizes. Among the most frontier-opening patents are technologies like PageRank and CDMA; among the most frontier-extending are decades of surgical stapler improvements. The framework reframes contradictory findings in the novelty-disruption literature as artifacts of collapsing two opposing forces into a single measure.
